In Satyaloka, the divine abode of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, a grand assembly was taking place. Lord Brahma was seated on a magnificent golden throne beside His divine consort Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge.
Around them were gathered many great sages and celestial beings. On one side sat the revered sages — Maharishis, Devarishis, Rajarishis, and Brahmarishis. On the other side stood the divine beings — Suras, Yakshas, Garudas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, and Kimpurushas — all attentively listening.
Lord Brahma was addressing the gathering and explaining the sacred teachings of the Vedas.
At that moment, the great sage Bhrigu Maharshi arrived in the divine assembly.
He glanced around at the gathering. But instead of offering the traditional salutations to Lord Brahma, Bhrigu walked forward proudly and sat on the throne without bowing.
Everyone present was happy to see the arrival of the great sage. However, they were shocked and displeased by his behavior. None approved of the disrespect shown toward Brahma, the creator of the universe.
Lord Brahma felt deeply insulted. Unable to tolerate the disrespect, His anger rose and His eyes turned red. In a furious tone, He said:
“Bhrigu! You belong to the same lineage as I do. Through your great penance you have obtained many powers. I expected you to behave with dignity. But I never imagined you would act so foolishly.
Do you think you are greater than the Maharishis present in this court? Are you greater than Anasuya, the chaste wife of Sage Atri, who once turned the Trimurtis into infants? Are you more powerful than Gautama Maharshi, who cursed Indra? Or stronger than Jamadagni?”
Hearing these angry words, Bhrigu immediately stepped down from the throne.
In his mind he thought:
“Brahma has lost his temper without even trying to understand why I came here. Such anger arises from Rajo Guna, the quality of passion and pride. He is not fit to receive the sacred offering of the Yagna.”
Then Bhrigu addressed Brahma and said:
“O Lord, you never attempted to understand my purpose. Instead, you rebuked me in anger. Therefore I pronounce this curse upon you — on Earth, there shall be no temples dedicated to you, and very few people will worship you.”
After uttering this curse, Bhrigu Maharshi left Satyaloka and proceeded towards Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva, to continue his test of the Trimurtis.
